Builder Inductee - 1992

Murray McAuley

Murray began his career at SAIT in the 1970s as an off-campus coach of the Men's Volleyball Team. In 1976 he joined the permanent staff as Assistant Coordinator of Student Athletics and also coached the Women's Volleyball Team, and also coordinated the Campus Recreation programs. He was also instrumental in setting up the Life Skills and Physical Activity courses, which SAIT students could enroll in for extra credits.

In 1981, Murray became the Coordinator of Student Athletics and continued in the position until he resigned in 1987 to pursue a personal business interest.

During his tenure at SAIT, Murray was instrumental in the success of the SAIT Athletic program and also served on the executive boards of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference and the Canadian Athletic Association.

Two highlights in Murray's career were hosting the 1982 Canadian Colleges Hockey and Volleyball championships and accompanying the Hockey team to China.

His intuition and foresight into potential funding problems at college lead to his setting up of the Foundation for a fundraising / external body for this purpose. Even though the Foundation did not become a reality during his time at SAIT, the ground work was laid for the organizational structure of the Trojan Athletic Foundation.

Murray is a most worthy Builder Inductee in the SAIT Athletic Wall of Distinction.
